Valgus Stress Test (Knee) Orthopedic Special Test

What is it used for?

  • Assessing the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

How to Perform

  • Position: Patient supine.
  • Action: Apply a Valgus (inward) force to the knee while stabilizing the ankle.
  • Test 1: Perform at (full extension).
  • Test 2: Perform at 30° flexion (isolates superficial MCL).

Interpretation of Results

  • Positive Test: Pain or excessive gapping (>5mm).
  • Note: Laxity at 0° indicates major damage to MCL + Cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL).

Diagnostic Accuracy

  • Sensitivity: 86-96%
