What is it used for?
- Reliably quantifying ankle swelling (edema).
How to Perform
- Position: Patient sits with the ankle in a neutral position.
- Action: Wrap a tape measure around the ankle in a specific order:
- Start at the Tibialis Anterior tendon.
- Go to the distal 5th metatarsal base.
- Cross over the Navicular tuberosity.
- Pass below the lateral malleolus.
- Pass below the lateral medial malleolus and back to the start.
Interpretation of Results
- Positive: A measurable difference (e.g., > 1-2 cm) compared to the uninjured side indicates significant swelling.
Diagnostic Accuracy
- Reliability: High (ICC = 0.99).
