What is it used for?

  • Diagnosing weakness of T10-T12 Nerve Roots or Spinal Cord Lesion.

How to Perform

  • Position: Patient supine with knees bent.
  • Action: Ask patient to lift their head and shoulders (partial sit-up).
  • Observation: Watch the belly button (umbilicus).

Interpretation of Results

  • Normal: Belly button stays in the center.
  • Positive: Belly button moves upward, downward, or sideways.
  • Interpretation: Movement indicates the muscles on the opposite side are weak (e.g., if it moves up, the lower abdominals are weak).
