Allen Test (Vascular) Orthopedic Special Test

What is it used for?

  • Assessing Arterial Blood Flow (Radial/Ulnar Artery Patency).

How to Perform

  • Step 1: Patient makes a tight fist. Examiner occludes both radial and ulnar arteries.
  • Step 2: Patient opens hand (palm is pale).
  • Step 3: Release one artery and watch for color return. Repeat for the other artery.

Interpretation of Results

  • Normal: Hand flushes red within 3-5 seconds.
  • Positive: Persistent pallor (>5s) indicates arterial occlusion.

Diagnostic Accuracy

  • Sensitivity: 73%
  • Specificity: 97%
